IRC was created by Jarko Oikarinen in August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (Multi-User Talk). Internet Relay Chat is a form of real-time text messaging using the internet for use with communication in disscussion forums, or channels, or, one-to-one messaging known as private messaging. The way it works is a person types a single-line text while in the channel and then sends it to the server via command and then the server transposes the data onto the forum. These are formally known as posts. I feel that Southland Media could benefit from using IRC because of the real-time response it offers, and the ability to use group commuication if necessary.
